Penelope would love to assist, but she is unsure of what to do with the American Normal she smuggled into London.

If he doesn’t want to be a part of the World of Mages, what will that mean for his relationship with Baz? Baz is juggling two family crises at the same time, making it impossible for him to discuss his newfound knowledge of vampires. It is a series about trauma, about healing, about laughter and learning to live fully. That means Simon must decide whether he still wants to be a part of the World of Mages. This is a series about the chosen one, and what happens after all the battles are fought, after you win. Overall this series is fabulous and I highly encourage reading if you like fantasy, specifically about magical schools/communities. They are adorable together, and I love Shepards sandwich appetite. It also allowed for a non-magical perspective and Penelope learning to be both more humble and to trust her instincts. Penelope and Shepard had a fun off shoot story that did nothing to add to the main plot, but sure made for humor. This is also a book that shows people trying to understand life from someone else's perspective (Baz trying to understand what it must be like for someone who does not have as much magical power as he does, etc.). But, when you feel on the edges of a community, sometimes you try things to fit in, instead of seeing your true worth. Some people are so desperate and eager that they put their trust in the wrong person. In some cases it can be rewarding, but in others it can be dangerous. The background story was an interesting take on what it used to be like to be Simon, but also the dangers of putting your faith in someone you don't truly know. But, they also fight hard for one another and truly love each other (slowly figuring themselves and their relationship out). There is a push and pull there, both unsure of their roles, their connection, their worth (one worried about his vampirism and the other worried about his lack of magic and wings).

You can still feel the original hate they had for each other, which was really just a denial of deeper feelings they have for one another.

Simon and Baz's relationship is very back and forth. She allows for the other characters to see themselves from the eyes of those they have inadvertently been affecting for years. She brings an outsider's perspective to the tight knit group that is Simon and his friends. I love the slow building friendship between her and Agatha. She quickly became a favourite of the series, with her blunt, abrupt, honest, and hilarious approach to life. This book had me in stitches though, this was by far the funniest of all three. I love this series, absolutely adore it and all of the main characters in it.
